Sandy Wainright took a deep breath and steadied herself for her fourth call. This one was going to a small non-profit based out of San Francisco. She had already spoken to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Greenpeace, and the World Wildlife Fund, and she’d sent each organization a copy of the video. All had promised they would run it and get it to as many media outlets as possible, but they were noncommittal about sending people to the Gulf of California to organize protests and stop the hunt. Most of their personnel were tied up in other parts of the world.

The Sea Shepherd organization was caught between two campaigns running simultaneously: one in the Galapagos preventing the Chinese fleet from illegal shark fishing and the other in the Southern Ocean where the activists were risking their lives putting themselves between the whales and the Japanese whaling fleet. Greenpeace’s Ocean Division was focused on the Faroe Islands, anticipating the yearly pilot whale slaughter conducted by the locals. The WWF would view the video and take it under advisement with its board of directors. In the end, they were sympathetic, but no one believed they had the resources or the ability to mobilize in time.

After the third call, Sandy felt truly alone. She was coming to the realization that, although people sincerely wanted to help and thought the hunt was heinous and abhorrent, they were hesitant about jumping into a full-blown protest in a foreign country. On some level Sandy understood this. But she also knew that time was of the essence. In a week, maybe two, none of this would matter anymore. The hunters would be gone, and there would be no trace of their having been there other than some bloodstained rocks and sand on a remote beach somewhere along the Baja coast.

Her next call was picked up by a pleasant-sounding man. “Cetus Global Alliance. This is Graham Neely.”

“Hi, Graham. My name is Sandy Wainright. I’m a marine biologist and humpback whale researcher working at the Institute for Marine Mammal Research in Baja California Sur. Do you have a few minutes? I need to tell you about a dire situation down here in the Gulf of California.”

“Sure,” said Graham. “What can I help you with?”

Sandy went on to detail the disappearance of several individual humpback whales in her study and the bloody massacre of dolphins they had witnessed at the San Mateo Cove. She also explained her theory—that there was corruption that went to the top levels of the Mexican government.

“I have something you need to see. I’m emailing it to you now.”

Moments later, Graham acknowledged that he had received the attachment. She waited while he downloaded the video to his computer.

“Holy shit!” Graham exclaimed. “Are the dates and times correct?”

“Yes.”

“My God. This looks like Taiji.”

“Funny you should say that. There were Japanese whalers down there among the locals. The way they rounded up those dolphins was almost exactly like the hunt in Taiji.”

“Sandy, I want to jot down some notes while I watch this.
